Dukes went 4-0 in event; Strong team effort cited

York girls basketball coach Jason Reinecke apologized in advance for using a cliché.
But it was a statement he felt truly summed up the reason why his squad walked away as the champions of the recent Minuteman Classic tournament.
“It sound cliché, but we played well as a team,” said Reinecke. “The weekend as a whole was really a team effort. In the games there were certain situations where different girls had to step up and the kids did the job and they had a lot of fun. It was exciting to win the tournament. Since I’ve been at York we’ve never been able to accomplish that. It was neat. The girls played hard and were able to get a couple of real nice wins.”
Reinecke was particularly impressed with the team’s victory over Hillcrest.
Hillcrest was a state finals team last year,” said Reinecke. “That game was a prime example of teamwork. They had a really good player. If we would have tried to guard her one-on-one, she would have scored at will. We made some adjustments and she was going to have to beat us as a team. I liked our help-side defense in that game. We really helped out well on defense. That’s a perfect example of who the weekend went. We did a couple of things and changed who guarded her so it wasn’t the same person the whole game. If she was going to the basket we made sure she was seeing at least three York jerseys in her way.”
York also faced Oak Park-River Forest—a West Suburban Conference Silver Division foe—in the tournament and scored the win.
“We had just played Oak Park that prior Thursday at the Rolling Meadows Shootout,” said Reinecke. “It was almost the exact same type of game as at the Minuteman. We jumped out to an early lead and Oak Park battled back and made things interesting. We were fortunate both times to be able to hold on for the victory.”
Reinecke was hard pressed to single out players who excelled during the tournament—because there were so many of them.
I really couldn’t single any girls out,” said Reinecke. “From top to bottom, everybody contributed. We had 10 players in the rotation all four games. Everybody stepped up and did their job. That’s part of the reason we had so much fun and had success. Everybody was contributing and performing in their roles.”
Reinecke said the tournament victory held some added importance.
“I don’t think there is any question about that,” he said. “Records don’t necessarily matter in the summer. With the amount of success we’ve had this summer and with doing well at the Minuteman shootout and the success we’ve had in the Glenbard South league, we’re going to take away some confidence and the understanding that when we’re all there as a team and doing what we’re supposed to do, we can be successful.”
York finished up summer play in Illinois last week at the Maine West Observational with a pair of games against teams from Missouri. The Dukes are wrapping up their summer schedule this week at a team camp at Grand Valley State University in Michigan.
“It will be a good test and a good team-building experience,” said Reinecke, who noted the team was slated to play 12 games alone in Michigan from Sunday through Tuesday of this week.
