Dorothy Sandstrom, 89

Dorothy Sandstrom, nee Lindgren, of Elmhurst, passed away July 1, 2010, at the age of 89. Beloved wife of Gene Sandstrom, dearest mother of Noel A. Loftus Sr. of St. Croix, US Virgin Islands, and the late Thomas J. Loftus. Fond grandmother of five, one of whom preceded her in death, and great grandmother of four. Dear sister of the late Robert and Richard Lindgren. She was a claims supervisor for the US Railroad Retirement Board for thirty years. After retirement in 1978, she managed the Villa Park Cinema, Loftus Theater Corp., for her son Thomas. Member of the Bethel United Church of Christ, Elmhurst, since 1988. Active in volunteer work for the Elmhurst Public Library, School District 205, Elmhurst Memorial Hospital, Elmhurst Park District, the Royal York Condominium, and Bethel Church. Robert C. Peterson, of Elmhurst, passed away May 31, 2010, at the age of 89.  Robert bravely served his country  attaining the rank of  Sgt. in the  US Army during World War II and was a recipient of the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart.  He is survived by his loving wife Virginia B. Peterson; his children, Roger and his wife Maria and Janice Peterson. He was the proud grandfather of Brettany, Lindsey, Bryant, Anya and Christian and was the honored great-grandfather of two,  and dear brother of June (the late Robert) Champion with many nieces and nephews surviving.  A memorial service will be held on Sunday, July 11 at 4 p.m. at the Elmhurst Presbyterian Church, 367 S Spring Rd. at St. Charles Rd. Paul W. Helm, 96

Paul W. Helm, of Elmhurst, passed away on May 27, 2010, at the age of 96, following a long battle with cancer. He was born in Swartzwald, Wisconsin, in October 1913.  He was the beloved husband of 75 years to Adele (nee Rice), and the loving father of Patricia Helm, Judith Helm, and Barbara Helm Meilinger. Cherished grandfather of Rebecca Thomas, Marc Gianneschi, and Dianna Ritter; great grandfather of Nicholas and Rachael Ritter, and Charles and Adele Thomas. Mr. Helm retired at age 72 from Kropp Forge Co. after 38 years of service.  He was an active member and leader at St. Peter’s United Church of Christ since moving to Elmhurst in 1949.  He was a driving force in the building of the YMCA in Elmhurst and an active participant in other civic activities. He will be dearly missed by his daughters, grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, in-laws and friends. We all looked up to him as a man of great integrity and faith. A memorial service is planned for a future date.

Jean C. Martin, 81

Jean C. Martin, of Elmhurst, died June 10, 2010, at Kindred Central Hospital from surgery complications. She was 81. Mrs. Martin lived in Elmhurst for 38 years and was born in Waterbury, CT, the daughter of Percy and Flora (nee Burns) Colby.  On Sept. 25, 1948, she married Floyd Martin who survives her.  Also surviving are daughters Dawn Scott and Georgia (David) Klug; sons Colby and Douglas; grandchildren Erica (Brian) Corrigan, Gwendolyn (Benjamin) Olson, Nicholas and Cameron Martin and Joseph Klug; great grandchildren Zachary and Jacob Markos, Hunter Olson and William Corrigan; sister Karen (Charles) Frazier of Wallinford, CT; and many nieces and nephews in CT survive her.  Her brother, David Colby, is deceased.  Jean was an encouraging and loving wife, mother, grandmother and sister.  She was an enthusiastic, good cook, an avid reader and a clean environment advocate.  She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
