Lombard man dies after being struck by Metra train in Elmhurst

The Elmhurst Police Department said a Lombard man was struck and killed by a Metra train in Elmhurst during the afternoon of Monday, Oct. 10.

According to police, 31-year-old Rashad Oliver was pronounced dead at the scene. There were no other injuries reported as a result of this incident.

At 3:10 p.m., Elmhurst police and fire departments were dispatched to the south platform area of the Elmhurst Train Depot for a report of a pedestrian being struck by a train. Upon arrival, responders located the victim’s body.

Police said witnesses saw Oliver walking across the Union Pacific Railroad tracks from north to south just east of the Addison Avenue-College Hill Avenue crossing as an inbound Metra train approached.

Following the incident, trains were stopped in both directions. College Hill Avenue at the railroad crossing and Park Avenue between York Street and Cottage Hill were closed for approximately three hours, said Elmhurst Police Chief Michael McClean.

McClean said an investigation of the incident by Elmhurst police, Metra police and the DuPage County Coroner’s Office is still ongoing.

“We’re still investigating what happened before we got there,” McClean said. “It is a very unfortunate tragedy.

“We encourage all people to pay attention to the gates when they approach railroad crossings for their safety because there could be multiple trains on several different tracks. It’s important to exercise personal safety and follow the warnings.”
