On Friday, June 10 beginning at 10 a.m., there will be a ceremony held in front of the Elmhurst Police Station in memory of Elmhurst Police Chief Michael Ruth, who passed away unexpectedly on May 30, while recovering from a medical procedure. Chief Ruth was a dedicated police professional who served 44 years in law enforcement.

The ceremony will include close family members and friends, members of the community, colleagues and law enforcement officials from the surrounding area. Following the ceremony, there will be a procession of vehicles, that will include law enforcement vehicles from the City of Elmhurst and other municipalities.

Residents should be advised that there will be street closures in the downtown area to accommodate the procession as follows:

  • First Street between Haven and York will be closed from 7:30 a.m. to approximately 11:30 a.m.
  • In addition, Palmer Drive from Schiller to south York St. will be closed from 8:15 a.m. until approximately 11:30 a.m.

According to maps released by the City, the procession is to depart from the police station and journey north on York Street then east on W. 3rd St. to Willow Rd., then south on Willow to Schiller to Palmer Drive.  The procession will continue along Palmer Drive and turn south onto York St. and follow all the way to Roosevelt Rd., going east.

The funeral procession will continue to Chief Ruth’s final resting place at St. Mary Catholic Cemetery in Evergreen Park.

It is strongly suggested that those who are not interested in attending the ceremony should avoid the downtown area on Friday morning.
