Cullerton resigns Senate seat, reportedly plans to plead guilty to federal charges

Former labor committee chair was charged with being paid by unions without doing work

Tom Cullerton resigned from the Illinois State Senate on Feb. 23. Cullerton, a Villa Park Democrat, represented the 23rd District in Springfield. He has reportedly agreed to plead guilty to federal corruption charges. In 2019, Cullerton was indicted on nearly 40 federal charges of embezzlement for allegedly receiving pay and benefits from Teamsters Joint Council 25 while doing little or no work. Cullerton was elected to the Villa Park Village Board in 2005. He spent four years as a village trustee before being elected Villa Park Village President in 2009. Near the end of his term as village president, Cullerton was elected to the Illinois State Senate.
