4 on the 4th race/kids run

4 on the 4th race will be held, beginning with the 4-mile race at 7:15 a.m., followed by ta 1K Kids race at 8:20. Both events start and finish on Prospect Ave. between Elmhurst College and Wilder Park. Proceeds to benefit ECAF. To register, visit 4on4th.com.

Thursday, July 5

From 7-9 p.m., the Spring Road Business Association presents Music at the Gazebo. This week, Summit, a good time Rock & Roll band will perform. Free and open to the public. Bring lawn chairs or blankets. Picnics welcome but no alcohol is allowed. Info: springroad.com

 

Friday, July 13

From 6-8 p.m. celebrate the joy of rollerskating at the opening of the new Chicago Rink Rats exhibit during a public after-hours opening night at the Elmhurst History Museum, 120 E. Park. Enjoy live musical entertainment by School of Rock and a book-signing by author and exhibit writer Tom Russo. Guests can lace up roller skates in the recreated “The Elm” Skating Rink outdoors on the museum grounds. BYO roller skates or limited skates/sizes available for use (socks required). Skate at your own risk, signed waivers required. Meet members of area Roller Derby Teams and get your own derby name. Hot dogs and ice cream available for purchase. Admission is free. Saturday, July 14

From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Elmhurst Toyota, Elmhurst BMW and Jaguar Elmhurst will host their annual USO Barbecue for the Troops at the dealership at 440 W. Lake St. Includes hog roast, a moon jump and slide for kids, demonstrations by U.S. Army, Marine Corps and Air Force. Free and open to the public. Info: 630-279-2160.

 

Wednesday, July 18

  • From 5:30-8:30 p.m., families are invited to City Centre for a Wednesday Night Block Party with free live music and kid-friendly fun. Performing in City Centre Fountain Plaza this week is John Charles Weston Trio. On stage at Elmhurst 255 North York Plaza location will be the Scottie Long Music Duo.
  • From 7-8 p.m., come to the Elmhurst YMCA, 211 W. First St., for “Skating Tricks of the Trade,” related to the roller-skating exhibit celebrating The Elm showing at the Elmhurst History Museum. Come watch demonstration of roller skating skills from the Golden Age through today on the YMCA’s outdoor rink, featuring professional competitive freestyle skater Carrie Svihlik plus members of Chicago Roller Talent and The Osiris Initiative. Admission is free, concessions available to purchase to support the YMCA scholarship program. Seating is limited. Outdoor event – rain date: July 26.

Sunday, July 22

Beginning at 8 a.m., the Run for Hunger 5K will step off from Yorkfield Presbyterian Church, followed by a Kids Run at 8:45 a.m. Participants are urged to bring a non-perishable food item for area food pantries. To register for the race, visit run4hunger.com

 

Wednesday, July 25

From 5:30-8:30 p.m., families are invited to City Centre for a Wednesday Night Block Party with free live music and kid-friendly fun. Performing in City Centre Fountain Plaza this week is Blue Aura. On stage at Elmhurst 255 North York Plaza location will be Lake Effect.

 

Ongoing programs:

  • Now through July 28, the AAUW is collecting books and media for its annual sale coming Aug. 2-5. Seeking gently used books, CDs and DVDs to sell at its Used Book Sale, which will take place Aug. 2 – Aug. 5 at Lincoln School. Note: No VHS or cassette tapes accepted.

Drop spots include Lincoln School, outside front door; Elmhurst Public Library outside (by book drop slots); Courts Plus inside the entrance; and Jewel Osco at 944 S. York Road.

  • Widows or Widowers (WOW) meet every third Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 537 S. York Road.   • The Elmhurst American Legion, T.H.B. Post No. 187, hosts a fish fry every Friday night from 6-8:30 p.m. New York steaks are available first Friday of the month. Musical entertainment follows.
