Obituary

Robert Hamilton Kaiser, 73

Robert Hamilton Kaiser passed away peacefully in his sleep on Tuesday, February 16, 2016 in his home in Charleston, West Virginia, at the age of 73. His unexpected death has left his family and friends devastated.
Born in Chicago, Bob moved to Elmhurst where he attended Hawthorne, Sandburg and York High Schools. He began his professional career in 1971 in Niagara Falls, N.Y. with Union Carbide’s Metals Division in Research and Development. In 1991, “Dr. Bob” moved with what had become Elkem Metals Company first to Pittsburgh, and then later to Charleston, W. Va., where he worked at the alloy plant until his retirement in 2004.
After retirement, Bob continued to help others through his extensive volunteering, especially with the AARP Tax Division, Habitat for Humanity’s homebuilding projects, and West Virginia Public Radio telethons. His unique perspective on life warmed the hearts of many and will be sorely missed.
Bob is survived by his beloved children Rolf (Shannon Bonds) Kaiser of Tiburon, California; and, Gretchen (Frank Flannery) Kaiser of Sisters, Oregon. Especially dear to “PaPa’s” heart were his two young grandchildren, Will and Isla. Also surviving is his wife Pauline; even though they had been separated for years, their relationship remained close.
In addition, his sister Donna (John) Wagner of Elmhurst and their sons Deane and Jeffrey. In lieu of flowers, Bob requested memorial donations be made to the Salvation Army, Iowa State University, or a charity of the donor’s choosing.
A Celebration of Life was held on Tuesday, February 23 at the First Presbyterian Church of Charleston.
The family plans to arrange an additional local memorial service in the spring. We have created a webpage at echothis.com/bob/ that will include a more detailed obituary and favorite pictures of the man who was loved so much. In addition, all are welcome to contact the family at [email protected]
